The King (along with his “man”) imposes a Tax on his Subjects:

By

David G. Fago

Hello citizens of Parma! As you may well know, I have continued my hiatus from posting on my blog since I am running for Parma City Council in Ward 8. However, I feel the need to break my silence after 2 Cuyahoga County commissioners decided to impose a sales tax on over a million citizens yesterday.

County Commissioners Jimmy “King George” Dimora and “Taxin’” Tim Hagen (notice Tim does not need a new nickname) voted 2-1 in favor of raising our sales tax in the county from 7.5% to 7.75%.

I have to commend Peter Lawson Jones (the lone dissenting vote) for sticking up for the people of Cuyahoga County and voicing his opinion in defense of our voting rights.

The argument you may hear from “Taxin’” and from his royal highness “King George” is that this tax is such a small drop in the bucket….no one will even notice.

In this man’s humble opinion….BS…and I don’t mean “Bad Smell”. To impose a tax (of any amount) without a vote of the people is both treacherous and dictatorial. The amount of the tax is not the issue…the principle of taking away the people’s right to vote IS the issue.

This tax does not affect the working class such as an unfair income tax. This tax affects EVERYBODY. This tax does not discriminate by race, gender, or age. This tax will affect baby boomers, senior citizens, generation X’ers, generation Y’s, and even children!! (Yes children….just imagine your 12-year old taking his hard earned grass cutting money to Toys R’ Us to buy himself a nice game or something…..he will be paying this tax!)

But wait…there is more. I am reading that this tax is not just going to fund the building of a new convention center, but the tax itself will be deposited into the county’s general fund. This is very important because once in the general fund, the money can be earmarked for anything….and with this majority of commissioners; I do mean ANYTHING (The sky is the limit boys!)

It is unfortunate, but this is another classic example of the royalty of the Cuyahoga County Democratic party taking the “democratic” process out of such a decision. Notice I said “royalty”. There are a lot of good Democrats that are very upset by this decision, and I will be proud to stand by members of all parties from Democrats to Libertarians, from Republicans to Green Party members in gaining our right to vote on this tax increase.

Visit www.putitontheballot.com. This is the group that is organizing the signature drive to give us the right to vote on this topic. The group will need 45,000 signatures in the next thirty days to get this done. (I also believe this is a treacherous form of democracy by creating near impossible timelines coupled with near impossible numbers).

As I knock on doors in Parma’s Ward 8, I will be bringing by a copy of the petition for your signature. Together we can send a message that our right to vote is precious, and that we will fight for this right each and every time.

More to come…
